For years, Douglas Clement carried golf bags at St Andrews and Kingsbarns Links, and for years, visitors asked him the same question: where’s the nearest whisky distillery? Fife didn’t have one. In 2009, tired of sending golfers elsewhere, he decided to build it himself.
Clement found his site in a derelict farm steading at East Newhall Farm, part of the Cambo Estate and dating back to around 1800. He raised £100,000 from 32 investors, many of them golfers he knew, then secured a further £670,000 Scottish Government grant. It still wasn’t enough. The full build needed roughly £1.6 million, and by January 2013, short of the target, Clement sold the project to the Wemyss family.
The Wemyss connection to the site runs deeper than money. William and Isabella Wemyss had founded independent bottler Wemyss Malts in 2005, and their family had owned part of the Cambo Estate itself between 1759 and 1783. With funding secured, construction took just eighteen months. Kingsbarns officially opened to the public on St Andrew’s Day, 30 November 2014, with Clement staying on as a director and visitor centre manager until the end of 2016.
The first spirit ran in March 2015. After three years of legally required maturation, Kingsbarns released its first whisky to Founders’ Club members in 2018, with the general release, Dream to Dram, following in January 2019. It didn’t take long to make an impression: Dream to Dram was named World’s Best Lowland Single Malt at the World Whisky Awards in both 2020 and 2022, part of a haul of nearly 30 industry medals for a distillery not yet a decade into production. In 2023, Dream to Dram was retired in favour of a new flagship, Doocot, alongside Balcomie and, later, Coaltown.
Kingsbarns’ style is built on a handful of deliberate choices. The barley is Fife-grown Concerto, sourced from three local farms and malted without peat by Muntons, giving the spirit its light, fruity, floral character rather than any smoke. The water comes from the distillery’s own borehole, drawing from an aquifer more than 100 metres down. Fermentation runs long, 65 to 85 hours, which the distillery credits for much of that fruitiness. The two Richard Forsyth stills, a wash still and a spirit still, both carry wide necks and gently descending lyne arms, a shape suited to a lighter, more delicate spirit.
Since 2017, the site has also housed Darnley’s Gin, distilled in a 350-litre still named Dorothy using botanicals grown in the distillery’s own Gin Cottage Gardens. The whole site runs on 100% renewable energy, and Kingsbarns holds a 5-star VisitScotland visitor attraction rating, with daily tours, a cafe, and a shop overlooking the golf links that inspired the whole project.

Since Kingsbarns’ first release in 2018, the core range has evolved twice, and the distillery has kept up a steady stream of limited editions and single casks alongside it.
