Eden Mill Distillery sits on the banks of the Eden Estuary in Guardbridge, a few miles outside St Andrews in the heart of the Lowland whisky region, on a site with a distilling history stretching back to 1810. The Haig family, the same family behind Cameronbridge, built the Seggie Distillery here, and the site later became a paper mill that closed in 2008. The University of St Andrews took over the site in 2010, and in 2012 Tony Kelly and Paul Miller opened Eden Brewery on the old paper mill grounds, bringing distilling and brewing back to this corner of the Lowlands after more than 150 years.
Eden Mill became Scotland’s first combined brewery and distillery when whisky and gin production began in 2014, and the first single malt was released in 2018. Beer production stopped in 2018 as the company focused on whisky and gin. In 2021, private equity firm Inverleith LLP took a majority stake, funding plans for a much larger new distillery on the same site.
The new distillery became fully operational in April 2025 after 21 months of construction, with a visitor centre following in October 2025, a major milestone after years of investment in the site. In December 2025, Dundee entrepreneur Tony Banks, through his investment firm Ruby Capital, acquired Eden Mill’s business and assets, securing the future of the distillery and all 41 jobs. Banks had already been a director of Eden Mill since January 2023, and Steven Kersley was appointed CEO in 2026 to lead the next chapter for the brand. With new ownership now in place and the state-of-the-art Guardbridge site fully up and running, Eden Mill looks well positioned to build on its St Andrews heritage for years to come.
